Gregorio Petit on Resilience, Development, and Loving the Game

My baseball journey started in my hometown, Santa Teresa del Tuy, Venezuela. From day one, I was influenced by my parents and later guided by great coaches who were passionate about the game and about teaching it the right way.

Mi camino en el béisbol comenzó en mi pueblo natal, Santa Teresa del Tuy, Venezuela. Desde el primer día estuve influenciado por mis padres, y más adelante por grandes entrenadores que sentían verdadera pasión por el béisbol y por enseñarlo de la manera correcta.

Getting demoted from the big leagues to Triple-A. That moment taught me how hard this game can hit you, but I had to fight to get back up there and keep being the resilient kid I’ve always been.

Cuando me bajaron de las Grandes Ligas a Triple A. Ese momento me enseñó lo fuerte que puede golpearte este juego, pero también me obligó a luchar para volver a subir y seguir siendo el muchacho resiliente que siempre he sido.

Houston really loves the game of baseball, and the kids here are very passionate about it. That passion is what pushes them to work hard and constantly strive to get better.

Houston ama el béisbol, y los muchachos aquí sienten una gran pasión por el juego. Esa pasión es lo que los impulsa a trabajar duro y a buscar mejorar todos los días.

My players must have fun while learning and working hard to improve. Every player has a unique way of learning, and it’s my responsibility to find that way. You can’t use the same method with every player — it simply doesn’t work like that.

Mis jugadores tienen que divertirse mientras aprenden y trabajan duro para mejorar. Cada jugador tiene una manera diferente de aprender, y es mi responsabilidad encontrar esa forma. No se puede usar el mismo método con todos los jugadores, porque así no funciona.

They try to copy Major League players without really understanding what they’re seeing. They focus too much on results instead of trusting their own abilities to play the game. And the most important mistake — they stop having fun.

Intentan imitar a jugadores de Grandes Ligas sin entender realmente lo que están viendo. Se enfocan demasiado en los resultados y no confían en sus propias habilidades para jugar béisbol. Y lo más importante: dejan de divertirse jugando.

I enjoy working with everyone, but players who love to work and are open to being coached are every coach’s favorite. That said, I love the challenge. I enjoy working with players nobody wants. It’s easy to coach very talented players, but not everyone can develop raw talent — and that’s what I love.

Disfruto trabajar con todos, pero los jugadores que aman trabajar y están abiertos a ser entrenados siempre son los favoritos de cualquier coach. Dicho eso, me gustan los retos. Me gusta trabajar con los jugadores que nadie quiere. Es fácil entrenar a un jugador con mucho talento, pero no cualquiera puede desarrollar talento en bruto — y eso es lo que más me gusta.

A great teammate is someone who challenges his teammates but also truly cares about them — someone who pushes others to work harder and helps make the team better.

Un gran compañero es aquel que reta a sus compañeros, pero que también se preocupa por ellos. Es el jugador que empuja a los demás a trabajar más fuerte y ayuda a que el equipo sea mejor.

I want them to understand the how, the why, the when, and the where — the meaning behind everything we do in training. And above all, I want them to love the game the way I love the game.

Quiero que entiendan el cómo, el por qué, el cuándo y el dónde — el significado de todo lo que hacemos en cada entrenamiento. Y sobre todo, quiero que amen el béisbol de la misma manera en que yo lo amo.

I’m still pursuing the goal of managing in the big leagues one day. I’ll be back in Midland with the A’s Double-A affiliate. At the same time, GP31 Baseball continues to grow. Along with my partners Javier Betancourt and Andres Sthormes, and our coaching staff, we’re focused on bringing everything we’ve learned in our professional careers to kids in the Houston area — especially Pearland, Shadow Creek, and Manvel. We love the game at GP31 and coach with an understanding of how complex baseball really is. Hopefully, we can help the game continue to grow the right way.

Sigo persiguiendo el sueño de algún día dirigir en las Grandes Ligas. Estaré de regreso en Midland con la filial Doble A de los Atléticos. Al mismo tiempo, GP31 Baseball sigue creciendo. Junto a mis socios Javier Betancourt y Andres Sthormes, y todo nuestro staff de entrenadores, estamos enfocados en llevar todo lo que aprendimos en nuestras carreras profesionales a los niños del área de Houston — especialmente Pearland, Shadow Creek y Manvel. En GP31 amamos el béisbol y entrenamos entendiendo lo complejo que realmente es este juego. Ojalá podamos ayudar a que el béisbol siga creciendo de la manera correcta.
